vj-dj-acts

VJ FEST is a live visual art festival to share knowledge and demonstrate VJ-ing as a social act!  VJ FEST is primarily a gathering for live video artists (VJs) and audiovisual artists from different parts of the world. The video-music festival is a platform for old and new technological ways of live visual performance upon music and sound . It is a promoter of collaborations and contacts for VJs on an international level. In VJ Fest Istanbul, as in other similar gatherings, artists share their knowledge about their art and techniques. They give talks and make workshops for the interested people. People learn about Vjing, and VJs improve their techniques with the help of other VJs. They make live audio-visual performances, VJ-DJ acts at public places as clubs, theather as well as in the streets.

History

VJ FEST ISTANBUL  premiered in 2008 as the first VJ art festival in Turkey. Its aim is to reinforce media art culture and vj networks in Turkey and worlwide.  In five years VJ Fest Istanbul has become one of the inspiring VJ festivals motivating discussions about the art of Vj-ing as well as accompanying VJs’ visualizations in the electronic music scene. The festival was initially intended for VJ-ing for DJs, but the organisation's activities have rapidly expanded like combining VJ-ing with other art medias such as painting , literature and architecture. It tries to create new forms of audiovisual performances. It is growing to make more social and interactive activities with using new media tools. First time in 2012, it happened in the streets, four nights with video projection mapping and interactive video (check the blog). Festival develops independently with the help of consulates and culture intstitutes but mainly volunteer participation of artists and organizer determines how festival happens. Events are for free.

In five years time (2008-2012), more than 150 artists  performed at Peyote, Mute club, Dogzstar, Ghetto, Studio Live Technik and French Culture Institute. With 2 academic researchers, they made free workshops and gave talks about VJ-ing at KozaVisual,  Apartment Project and Galatasaray ITM.

Workshops

Workshops

WORKSHOPS ARE FREE AND OPEN

Artists talk about their works and their Vjing techniques in general and in detail. We discuss about Vjing as a profession, including topics like finding sponsors and making contracts for the VJs. VJ tools and software workshops were held on Resolume Avenue, Arkaos VJ, Modul8, Quartz Composer and Puredata. In 2012, there will be vvvv workshops. BRING YOUR LAPTOPS AND JOIN!

What is the future of VJing? What is the future of live cinema? How can we interact with the audience? What is the social role of VJ? Does video jockeying need to be digital? What is new media? Are we doing art when we mix commercialized music videos? How do we use VJ software programs? How can we make footage? How can we make
interactive projects? These are some of the possible questions raised in the workshops.

VJ Comments

“VJ Fest Istanbul was a wonderful gathering of a bunch of very nice and very creative people with more then one vision — all taking place in one of the most fascinating cities on planet. Beside great performances accompanying cool electronic beats it also featured interesting workshops and most importantly inspiring and motivating discussions about the art of VJing, but also about the daily work and the business side in a VJ's life.”

Rolland Lindner (VJ Decollage.tv – Austria)

“I love istanbul! Nice to meet you everyone ! Vjing is good ! Art is good ! You are good ! You are vj ! Vjing is not a compétition ... Working together is vjing”

Stephane Couapel (VJ Scouap – France)

“I'm really inspired by the love and passion you have for VJing and hope to be back in Istanbul next year.”

Kristel Doest (VJ Aineko – Holland)
